Prison Safari

Prison Safari is a combination of elements from two different photography trips, one to Port Arthur and another to the Serengeti of Africa. View this on black.

Port Arthur

Port Arthur is an amazing historical part of Australia. The port played a huge part in punishing the convicts that were sent to Australia during the 1800’s and was a natural prison with no need for walls. The penitentiary was the main section for housing the criminals and the Port Arthur historical site is now a tourist attraction that I can recommend if you find yourself in Tasmania. You can see more photos and information about my trip to Port Arthur here.

The Serengeti

In 2009 I travelled to Africa and spent most of that time on safari. I have always wanted to build a composition piece with my photographs from Africa. I was extremely happy with the way my panoramic HDR turned out that I thought this would be a good opportunity to do such a piece. More details about my Africa trip can be found here.

Creating the HDR images

I created a panoramic HDR image of the Port Arthur Penitentiary by taking multiple bracketed images in portrait mode. I use portrait mode when taking panoramic photos to try to escape any geographic distortion. I then created the individual HDR images in Photomatix. In total the original image was made up of 5 HDR frames stitched together. The stitching was done in photoshop cs5.

Adding the Animals

I then took various favourite animal photos from my safari in Africa and opened them individually to mask and edit them and place them in the composition. When placing these animals in and around the composition I made sure I was aware of the light source and the effect that would have on the animal depending on where I placed it in the composition. Each animal had a different light source so it was challenging to alter the shadows to reflect light source in the main photo.
