Photography Tip Number 11 – Getting Published and Getting Paid

Find as many publication contacts as you can online. Research the publications and find their preferred style of publication.

In my time traveling throughout Australia I contacted as many publications as possible and proposed articles based on their style and where I was situated at the time. You’re going to get a lot of NO’s. but 1 yes for 100 rejections is actually well worth it. The one yes you get might be the snow ball you need that keeps on rolling. Just be sure to theme your proposals around the style of the publication. Like a black and white series for a black and white specialist magazine.

For example below I was published last year in the Australian Digital Photography Magazine when I wrote an HDR tutorial based on Mckenzies Beast photo. It was because I was emailing and emailing every week that I finally got the opportunity. Now ADPM are about to publish a new feature article on my video work in Sumatra.

There are many other ways to get published. If you never get a yes from respected publications. Don’t take it personally. Explore the self publishing option. I will detail that in tomorrow’s tip.
