New Perspective…

Since the moment I left for my Australian road trip I have been dreaming of owning a drone that will help provide a new perspective of my work in photos and in videos. Back in 2011 the technology was good but not quite there in terms of stability for video work. But now the technology has progressed a staggering amount and it was about time I took the plunge.

I researched a lot of different drones from different manufacturers but always seemed to fall back on the drone of choice for so many, the DJI Phantom 2. I was very interested in looking to work with a drone that might be suitable for a mirror-less camera as I have been seriously considering adding a mirror-less Sony A7r to my camera bag and that would have been good to have a mirror-less set up on a drone, but I felt the need to take this transition in simple steps. The DJI phantom is very much a user friendly drone when it comes to flying with the ability to fly in GPS mode. This allows for better stability and if there is a problem in flight the drone has a return to home option that automatically return to the place it took off from. Some other manufacturers also have this mode but I decided to play it safe and go for the DJI phantom 2. My setup is with the GoPro Black Hero 3 and the Zenmuse H3-3D Gimbal, which is just incredibly stable and a brilliant piece of technology. The video footage is super professional and being able to film in 2.7k in pro tune makes for some nice options available when it comes time to post processing and colouring the footage.

After about a week of usage I decided to add an FPV (first person view) with a video transmitter and receiver that sends the footage to a monitor attached to the remote live from the drone. This is such a necessity when it comes to flying at a distance safely and also capturing the shots that I want right there in the live feed. I can watch the shot as it happens and re-take it if needed, such a time saver.

Gosh I am so looking forward to capturing some incredible footage and photos from all angles with this genius piece of technology. In December I will be taking it on the elephant patrol to capture some of the amazing conservation area and perhaps some wild elephants and then off to Bali for Christmas followed by a trip to the Phillipines two weeks later. Great trips ahead so keep your eyes peeled.
