Emotional Photography

I always want to capture all elements of life and culture and not just beautiful landscapes, but sometimes I also try to use my photography to help people when life has dealt them a cruel blow. In December an earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck the coastal region of Aceh and over 100 lives were lost and many thousand were injured and made homeless. I travelled to the epicenter only 3 days after the earthquake struck to see what I could do to help in the hope my photography might be able to capture the moment and spark people into helping those in desperate need. By creating stills and footage with my photography I could tell a story of those that were deeply effected by the earthquake and perhaps raise some money to help the cause. This particular photo is of a man resting on the rubble of what was once his house where he lost two family members. It’s a difficult and emotional thing to do to see such devastation and heartbreak and to talk to people who have lost loved ones really brings out the emotions. Taking photos with a heavy heart really makes me stop and think about the moment and try to think about what it must be like to be in my subjects shoes. What is going through his mind at this moment as he struggles to decide what to do next…
