British Cemetery, Bengkulu, Sumatra

While staying in Bengkulu I discovered great history of this city and the British and Dutch settlers of yesteryear. The first European settlers in Bengkulu were British and there is an old British cemetery situated in the heart of Bengkulu. The family living next door are the caretakers and take donations from all people who visit. They have some characters for kids in this family:0).

Some of the graves date back to the 1700’s but what I noticed more was the difference between the British graves of Bengkulu and some of the earlier settlers graves in Australia.

it’s clear to see how the culture has influenced the styles of graves for the British settlers in Sumatra compared to those in Australia. The Sumatran graves are carved from stone and rise high above the ground where the Australian settlers graves have kept their traditional British make up. Even some of the Sumatran graves are of a tomb style where bodies might be buried above the ground.
